Tibetan Medicine

The Tibetan medical system is one of the world's oldest known medical traditions.

It is practiced throughout Tibet/China and the Himalayan kingdoms of Bhutan, Nepal, Ladakh, and Sikkim. Refugee physicians have further brought Tibetan Medicine to India, Russia, Europe, Australia and USA .

The origins of Tibetan Medicine go back to the shamanistic Bon era of Tibet, pre-dating the arrival of Buddhism to the country. Aspects of traditional Chinese, Indian (Ayurvedic), as well as Persian and Greek medical systems were incorporated through the centuries.

The Five Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space) are considered the base of existence and its cycles.

Another foundation of Tibetan Medicine is the traditional Buddhist belief, that all illness ultimately results from the three mental poisons: Greed, Ignorance and Hatred. These co-relate with the three primary body humors of Badkan (skrt.'Kapha'), rLung (skrt.:'Vata') and mKhrispa (skrt.'Pitta'). Dependent on each persons unique mental, emotional and physical constitution and circumstances, illness arises or healing is achieved.

A Tibetan Doctor will use various methods to form a diagnosis, and will then use diet & lifestyle guidelines, herbal & mineral medicines, and external therapies (such as massage and moxibustion) to re-balance body, emotions and mind.

The Tibetan medical heritage, also called 'The science of healing' (gSo Ba Rig pa), is based on the centuries old book 'The Four Tantras' (rGyud-bZhi), which remains the fundamental medical text up until today.

The potency of Tibetan Herbal Medicine is unsurpassed. Complex formulas (typically containing 3-25 ingredients), include large amounts of unique Himalayan high altitude plants. These formulas were often formulated by great Buddhist sages and enlightened masters of the past. The medicine is finally blessed and empowered in Buddhist medical ritual.

A few of these potent treasures, the ones known to be especially safe, we are happy to share with you here on Himalayan Remedies.

Tibetan - Sorig Psychology and Common Imbalances

Basic psychological issues are related to the pathology of the three humors, as our mind is strongly connected to our inner energy. The mind and body are inseparably linked. The study of the mind, its structure and functions helps us to understand and facilitate healing.
The Tibetan science of mind is well known from Buddhism, and its profound systems of cultivation. Here, the perspective will be medical, addressing mental issues from the physical, energetic, and spiritual perspective.  The nature of mind, thoughts, emotions and emotional blockages are studied. More serious mental disorders such as schizophrenia are often believed to be connected to supernatural influences, where certain spiritual healing practices are used.

It is true that our pains and other physical discomforts demand our attention. This is where the saying "sticking out like a sore thumb'" originated from. It is difficult to ignore the obvious when we are physically hurting. Common sense tells us that we should seek help to alleviate our discomforts. Wrong calls on healthcare matters and medical decisions involve choosing between imperfect options with side effects contributing to complications.

Physical illnesses are the symptoms of a greater imbalance that may or may not have a root cause in the physical.

Holistic or "wholistic" healing addresses all parts of the individual, not just the physical aspect of a person where manifested illnesses are most apparent. Holistic healing is not intended to serve as a band-aid or a one time fix. It is an ongoing journey of discovery in search of more answers and ultimately; living better, being healthier, and striving for wholeness.

Holistic Healing Goes Beyond the Mind-Body Connection:

Holistic healing is really a lifestyle approach. The holistic approach goes far beyond the Mind-Body connection of finding and maintaining wellness. Overall wellness AND "wholeness" is highly valued. All parts of a person's life (physical healing, mental health and wellness, emotional well-being, and spiritual beliefs and values) are considered. Taking a holistic approach involves seeking the tools that will help us attract our desires and find personal power.

A person who embraces the desire to find wholeness within his own being soon learns the importance of tending to relationships, caring for the planet and our environments, having compassion for humankind in general, and accepting and tolerating differences among a diverse population of people.

Role of the Holistic Healer:

The holistic healer recognises that our discomforts or pains are merely symptoms of an imbalance. The imbalance could be a physical issue, the result of abusing the physical body through an unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, or too little sleep. Or, the imbalance may be the result of mental, emotional, or spiritual needs not being met. No aspect (mind, body, spirit, or emotions) of a person is overlooked when an holistic treatment is sought.

The holistic healer looks at the "whole person" in order to make his or her complete evaluation and uses all information gathered before suggested treatments to the client are offered.
